One other title of this passage can be The Academic Lecture: A Conspiracy. For, there is mention of the attempts of administrators to keep the lecture format as it solves the dilemma of how to provide professors for large numbers of underclassmen at a university. The lecture class with many students is economical. Instructors, too, conspire in retaining the lecture format of class, a format that allows them center stage and "lectures are easier on them than debates." Professors can give lectures and pretend to teach, "with no one the wiser, including the participants." However, in a classroom in which everyone participates, students are less able to be passive and hide their abilities, and teachers little opportunity to "show off."
