A Streetcar Named Desire begins in an area of New Orleans called Elysian Fields. Blanche Dubois, a former school teacher, is there to visit her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley. Blanche helps herself to some liquor as she waits alone in Stella's apartment until her sister arrives. When Stella gets there, Blanche shares the news that the family has lost its plantation and home, Belle Reve. Stanley soon arrives and questions Blanche about the loss of the plantation. Blanche gives him the papers showing the bank foreclosure on the property. Stanley then reveals that Stella is expecting a child.
