Water is wasted in different ways by different users and delivery methods:
Municipal systems: water delivery systems develop leaks. A lot of water is lost to leakage in the pipes that run underground to deliver municipal water to homes.
Irrigation: Water is lost to evaporation and run-off. Drip irrigation systems and only watering at night reduce this wastage.
Homes: Drips or leaks waste water. Other causes of wastage: inefficient toilets, long showers or baths, running the water when you don’t need it (e.g. when brushing your teeth), inefficient appliances, hand washing cars (commercial car washes are more efficient), inefficient lawn watering, running dishwashers and washing machines with only partial loads, etc.
