In Chapter five of The Great Gatsby, Gatsby convinces Nick to invite his cousin Daisy to tea so that the two former lovers can catch up.  Gatsby is incredibly nervous when the day finally arrives; he bumbles around muttering to himself that this was a bad idea and eventually knock's over Nick's clock.  Many people see this as a symbol of Gatsby's attempt to stop time.  Gatsby is stuck in the past and is trying to sweep Daisy off her feet with his wealth, a feat he could not accomplish in the past.
