Ellen's talent was acting. She played several leading roles in her school's drama presentations. Anything involving imagination, Ellen was a whiz at it. Her talent came in handy when her family first fled from the Germans, and Ellen stayed with the Johansens. She pretended to be the sister Lise, who in fact had died a few years earlier. She memorized a lot about Lise and was able to carry off the deception when questioned by the Germans in the early morning hours. Later on, when she and her family were about to flee for Sweden on Uncle Henrik's fishing boat, Ellen played the role of a grieving relative at an all night vigil for a supposedly dead relative. She played the part well even when confronted by the Nazis.
