The topic of identity in "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin is tied up with Louise Mallard's attitude toward herself as a wife versus her attitude toward herself as a widow. A thesis about identity could argue that Louise/Mrs. Mallard's identity is defined by her marriage, so much so that imagining herself free of her husband offers her the possibility to redefine herself.

In the story, Mrs. Mallard's husband has supposedly died in a train accident, and as she has "heart trouble," her family must be careful how they deliver the news. Mrs. Mallard cries at first, and then she isolates herself in a room to think about the loss. In the room, she looks out the window and sees signs, both natural and social, of life all around her. She gradually awakens to the idea that as a widow, she will now be "free" of her obligations to her...
