Charlie and Algernon were very much alike and their experiences very similar. Algernon must go through mazes and this is a metaphor for the life that Charlie must lead. He has to do whatever the scientists tell him to do. The cage that Algernon lives in is also symbolic to this. In a sense, Charlie lives his life in a cage. He is not free to do as he wishes. Just as Algernon runs into obstacles (maze), Charlie also has obstacles to overcome. He falls in love with Dr. Kinnian and I suppose he knows that this may be a love that will never come to be.
