Find evidence from either media or scientific sources that shows how money and funding can shape and influence what research is or isn't carried out
This question is about financial support and scientific research.
It is clear that funding can and does shape and influence what sorts of scientific research are and are not carried out. It could hardly be any other way.
Scientific research costs huge amounts of money and the money to fund that research has to come from somewhere. That means that the kinds of research that will be funded are
- Kinds that might make a firm rich down the road (pharmaceuticals, for example)
- Kinds that can get political or charitable support (AIDS funding, space program, etc)
You can follow the second link to see a complaint from a sector that was not funded. The fact that they are complaining shows that funding matters. The first link is a discussion of the need to push for funds for CERN. I assume your professor will have given you some hints for how to find other sources as well...
The link between scientific research and funding is directly related. In fact, research cannot be done without funding. So, the question is: what is researched? The simple answer is probably things that are lucrative. Here a few example. The US spends so much money every year on military technology. Why? National security, but also profitability. People are researching in this area, because there is government funding and money involved. Here is another example. Now there is a huge push with government tax breaks and all for green technology. Because there is this push, there is an increase in research in the green sector. So, once again a person can see that funding leads to research.
