Facebook Does Facebook affect student's study or not ?

I would have to say that FaceBook does impact student's studies. I took a pole one day, out of curiosity, and found that many of my students spent more time on FB than on their studies.As some posters have pointed out though, it is not only FB which is distracting. I would have to say technology itself is (games, texting, IM, etc.).

Facebook certainly has the potential to impact a student's study habits, but so do X-box, Play Station, computer games, smart phones, sports, friends, etc. In my day, well before Facebook and other social media were around, we used a different form of technolgy to 'waste time'. It was called the telephone. I wish I had a few of the hours I spent on the phone while in my teens back now!

The bigger issue is one of priorities and student's being able to set them. There will always be some new, shinny thing out there to distract us from the task at hand. And honestly, some level of distraction is good. Remember, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. However, all things in moderation is a good rule to follow.

As much as some of my generation lament how much time and energy students spend today on sites like Facebook, it's not too hard to remember my parents having a very similar talk with me when I was a teenager about how much time and energy I was wasting on the telephone.

Facebook is just one type of thing students do to waste time,and I don't think Facebook is any different than video games, television viewing, talking on the phone or reading a non-school book. On the other hand, my students will get on Facebook to clarify homework assignments or work on group projects. Every generation of adults will question the younger generation's work ethic in regards to whatever new, bright, shiny thing is out there.

You should definitely do an Enotes keyword search of "Facebook" as I believe there are a couple of other open discussion threads about it.

My best personal example to answer your question includes the number of students who were active on Facebook for several hours the night before their research papers were due.  Many, who had "friended" me, the teacher, were openly complaining about how long it was taking to complete.  I finally posted a general update: "Freshman.  Your research papers will be much easier if you get off Facebook and open up Microsoft Word."

I don't think Facebook, as a rule, positively or negatively affects students more than any other mindless time-sucker would.

The urge for students to use Facebook (or use other apps) during class time is overwhelming for some; the time spent on FB outside the classroom has to be even greater. I have witnessed many college students who can't restrain themselves from signing on to Facebook for a whole class period, even when professors warn them that grades will be reduced. I spend a few minutes on FB each day, and even that small amount of time takes me away from more important pursuits.

It certainly affects my productivity from time to time, and I know from experience that it negatively impacts high school and college students' efficiency. I also think it has a number of possibilities for use in the classroom, even if only for the purposes of rapid communication. But overall, I'd say that it's a major timewaster for most students.

Many of my former students are now in college and are my Facebook friends.  I will see them post things like "I need to study, so why am I on Facebook?"  This shows that Facebook does help make them procrastinate.  Of course, we procrastinated plenty in the days before Facebook so I'm not sure that FB makes it any worse.

It depends a lot on the student. I have known groups of students that have used facebook effectively in order to coordinate and prepare a presentation. However, I think there is a massive danger that students use facebook primarily as a diversion to getting down to serious study, and therefore this detracts from their performance.
