Free is a novel written by Todd Komarnicki. It follows the story of Jefferson Alexander Freeman, a homeless person who finds himself involved in the investigation of three murders. He strives to work with Detective Agatha Li to solve the case. Komarnicki writes with a poetic style that strengthens his exploration of the issues surrounding his titular character, Free.

One of the more interesting analogies that Komarnicki uses in the novel involves pumpkin seeds. In Free, pumpkin seeds symbolize a person's life and dreams. The seeds need strong soil to grow to their full potential and must be exposed to the proper environmental conditions. This relates to how a person needs a strong community support system to be successful and happy in life. Pumpkins are an apt comparison because they start as a very small seed but grow to be quite large. They share nutrients along a connected vine and reach into the ground for replenishment.

Each of these features of pumpkin seeds could be seen as an analogy for the human condition. The small seeds could represent a person starting from humble beginnings yet growing into something truly magnificent. The pumpkins getting their nutrients from the ground could represent the human need to "ground" oneself and build upwards from a strong foundation. The resiliency of pumpkin seeds shows how a person must fight through hardships to make it in life. In many ways, the life cycle of a pumpkin represents the life path of a person and their goals.
