There is certainly a link between loading up on carbohydrates and performing well in an event that heavily taxes the body and its fuel reserves; however, "carb loading" is most definitely not the only reason a person will find success in a marathon. A runner could load up on as many carbohydrates as he or she could possibly consume, but if that runner has spent zero time training for the marathon, they will not find success regardless of how many carb calories consumed.
