Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins all play a vital role in the nutrition of the human body. All three are taken in through foods and used specifically by the body for certain functions. To begin, carbohydrates have four primary functions, all of which revolve around energy. Carbs, once ingested, become glucose in the blood. This glucose serves as the energy for the majority of organs in the body. The glucose is distributed in the blood and used in cellular respiration, which is the specific use of energy by the cell. If the body has enough energy being used, the carbs become glycogen; this is the stored version of glucose.
Lipids are also very important to the body. Much like carbohydrates, lipids deal with energy storage. Excess energy used by the body is stored through lipid preservation. These fats, also called triglycerides, are where long-term energy is stored. When fasting occurs, the body taps into this stored energy. Another vital function of lipids is the regulation of body temperature.
Proteins have the obvious function of muscle growth. It also has a very important function of repairing the body. Any misuse of the body is corrected with stored proteins. Another important function with protein nutrition is that it helps balance the acidity of the body.
