Explain the differences between motivation and persuasion.

The difference between motivation and persuasion could center on inner reasoning versus external pressure. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, motivation can be defined as the reasons why one does something or behaves in a certain way. Motivation is also defined as “the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.” Meanwhile, the New Oxford American Dictionary defines persuasion as pushing someone to do something through reasoning or debate.

Motivation seems to come from within a person. A person already holds specific beliefs, goals, or inclinations, which is the reason why they espouse certain actions. Persuasion appears to require outside actors. A person isn’t motivated to behave in a particular manner, so other people have to step in to try and reason or argue with them so that they’ll follow a different course of action.

For an example of motivation, one can try to think about a time when they wanted to do something, so they did it. Maybe they wanted to watch a movie or go outside to participate in a soccer game with friends. Since the person wanted to do these things, they had their own reasons for doing them. No one had to convince them, because they were already motivated.

For an example of persuasion, one can try to think about a time when they didn’t want to do something but did it anyway. Maybe they didn’t want to put their phone away, or perhaps they didn’t want to stop playing their favorite video game. However, they did stop, because others reasoned with them and persuaded them that they should give their phone a rest or take a break from their video game.
