Explain the significance of seting/place in both Sand County Almanac with Essays on Conservation from Round River by 'Aldo Leopold and Walden by Henry David Thoreau
From an environmental point of view, both settings influence their authors in quite a significant manner. Being at Walden Pond helps to allow Thoreau to understand how individuals are meant to be at a position in consciousness that is outside the encroaching view of social orders. Thoreau's composition would have lost some credibility in its assertion of individuality, being apart from social orders, and the reverence of nature if he had written it in the middle of Boston or New York. It is this setting of Walden Pond where Thoreau is able to examine his own identity and the notion of individual consciousness when he is set apart from a growing cosmopolitan setting. In the same light, Leopold's work uses his own home town of Sand County as the setting where he is able to construct his own definition of his conception of humans and their relationship to the environment, his land ethic. The reverence of the natural setting and ecosystem that Leopold found in his home allowed him to carve out his belief that a synchronicity between humans and the natural setting is essential. Leopold is impacted by his setting of rural Wisconsin as it allows him to envision a transformative ethic of environmentalism. In both works, the setting becomes critical to enhancing the ideas put forth in each.
