The role of the court fool was a very important one. He had the liberty of saying what was true and critically viewing the happenings of the court and the persons in power. Often he enjoyed the favour of the ruler and was a source of merriment with his antics and sayings.

In As you like it, Touchstone provides a link between the pairs of lovers and acts as a foil to the sincere passion of Orlando and Rosalind and the way in which they woo and win the love of their life.

Besides Touchstone with his down-to-earth attitude is a foil to the courtier Jacques, who is often found in the position of the fool in spite of his pretensions at being philosophical and high-minded.
