The area of the vascular bed and the velocity of blood flow are inversely proportional to each other. This means, that as the area of the vascular bed increases, the blood flow velocity decreases. Similarly, when the area of the vascular bed decreases, the blood flow velocity increases.

This relationship between the area of the vascular bed and the velocity of blood flow is important because it defines the time available for the exchange of nutrients. For example, the blood flow is slowest in capillaries and this provides sufficient time for exchange of nutrients and gases. This exchange is really important for our body. To be more precise, as the blood moves slowly through the capillaries, nutrients, food, and oxygen leave the blood and enter the body cells. In exchange, the blood picks up carbon dioxide and waste materials.
