In general though, after the first whispers of the anthropophagy that was necessary for survival reached the media the reaction was one of shock and horror. Being in dominantly Catholic countries, the reactions included accusations of gross sins. Yet the Catholic Church was quick to correct that overzealous tone by asserting that such acts in extremis were not sin but, to the contrary, refusing to do what was necessary for survival would have been the sin.
