Respect is very important when studying religion in an academic context.  This is because all religions feel that their beliefs and their rituals are divinely inspired.  Academics studying religion do not necessarily share this belief.  They come at the study of religion from a much more dispassionate and "objective" point of view.  This can be very annoying to true believers because the researchers will be looking at their religion starting from the point of view that their religion is not divinely inspired.  In order not to be insulting to the people whose religion they are studying, academics must be respectful as they study the religion, its values, and its rituals.
