You also need to be aware of your symptoms, because sometimes you just won't find the tick.  It sounds gross, but ticks can get into your body very creatively.  If you start to feel lethargic and sick and you live or have been in an area known for ticks, get tested!

Outdoor pets should be carefully handled and preferably not allowed to enter the house.

One should be very careful after contact is made with animals like deer and small mammals that live outdoors. The skin should be carefully examined to identify any ticks and the best way to remove them is to use a tweezers are pull out the ticks, ideally without crushing them.

Lyme Disease is transmitted by ticks, so the best way to avoid getting it is to avoid having ticks attach themselves to you.  Some ways to do this would be to:

  • Wear long sleeves and pants in areas with ticks.
  • Use insect repellent
  • Try to reduce the habitat for ticks in your yard.  Don't let piles of leaves and brush stay in your yard, especially in shady areas.
