Kunthi mockingly accuses Ruku of having had a liason with a man when she encounters her returning late at night while her husband is away. In truth, Ruku, who makes derisive insinuations about Kunthi's lifestyle as well, has visited the doctor, Kenny, about her daughter's barrenness.

Ruku expresses feelings of hope because the doctor has agreed to try to help her daughter. She expresses hopelessness when her daughter's husband reveals he has waited long enough and has found another woman.
