Every work of literature has one or more themes, and many themes are common to many different works of literature. Consider the following theme: Things are not always what they seem.
Which of the stories in your reading assignment does not fit this theme?
a. The Necklace
b. The Yellow Wallpaper
c. A Hunger Artist
In The Necklace, the necklace she thought was so expensive and ended up being the cause of all of their future troubles ended up being nothing more than costume jewelry.
In The Yellow Wallpaper, it seems to everyone that this poor woman is completely crazy and that in order to get better she needs the treatment of being stuck in her room. However, as time goes in, it turns out being forced to stay in her room and stare at the walls is making her insane.
In the Hunger Artist, people think the hunger artist is torturing himself by not eating, and they come to this conclusion because his manager shows them a bunch of pictures of him looking miserable. In reality, he is miserable because he wants to stay in the cage and continue to fast, and he is fasting because he could never find food that he liked.
Araby is a story about a boy who meets a girl and wants to find excuses to talk to her and spend time around her. He tells her he will pick something up from the bazaa for her, but in the end he arrives there too late.
Going by the summaries, I would say D is the only story that doesn't really have a major theme of things not always being what they seem.
D. Things are not what they seem...
It depends, if it is to force fit the 4 books into answering the question, then I guess D can be accepted...
Otherwise, it would be Araby in this case, as there is no major theme...
