The Sun going nova does set an absolute date when the physical Earth will cease to exist.  However, life as we know it will probably be gone long beforehand. What's to rule out another Yucatan asteroid event wiping nearly everything out, as it did the dinosaurs and 90% of the rest of things living 65 million years ago?

I have to agree that the end of the world will come, for me, when I die. I am far from a Doom's Day theorist. I do not believe that the world is going to end in December. If it does, there is nothing that I can do to stop it. I simply refuse to worry (it is much easier that way).

I hope that the world will not end for a long time.  I do not think it will end in my lifetime.  We will never know, so I think the best thing is to continue living the best life you can, because regardless of whether or not the world is ending, we all could die at any time!

The world, for human life or for earthly life, could end without an explosive apocalypse. A meteor could strike the planet with little-to-no warning.

Our world could end, as it did for the dinosaurs, though some kind of "world" on earth would continue or come again...

As far as predictions go, however, I don't put any stock whatsoever in predictions of the end of the world in 2012 or any time.

In the 42 years I've been alive, I can remember at least three predicted ends to the world with this year being the 4th.  Hasn't happened yet.  I suppose that for each of us individually, this world will end when we die.

Somewhere around 4.5 billion years from now, the sun will use up its hydrogen fuel and begin to expand. It will then swallow up the interior planets, perhaps including Earth. It is, however, almost inconceivable that humans will be around at that point anyway. So the question, then, is when our world will end. Nobody knows when or how, but I'd be willing to bet (as would every respectable scientist I've read who has commented on the subject) that it won't coincide with the end of the Mayan long-form calendar, which will just start over the next day, just like ours does.
