For young professionals, a need for a flexible work schedule might exist because of their youth. Young professionals are newly emergent into a workplace setting. Their work patterns have not fully formed. Along with that, a full commitment towards the working life or the particular workplace might not have entirely developed. Existentially, this group of individuals might wish to pursue other avenues such as independent work, second jobs, or other professional paths that might necessitate a flexible work schedule. In another way, young professionals might want a flexible work schedule precisely because they wish to construct a realm of their lives away from work. Young professionals who are new to the demands of a workplace might want to "have a life" that is not entirely subsumed by the job. This might be another reason why young professionals might embrace the idea of flexible work schedules. For this group, being able to develop permanent part- time avenues to accommodate other interests or a compressed work week would allow for flexibility. Such options would enable this group to pursue paths that might exist outside of the workplace, while being able to serve as active contributors to it.
For working parents, the need for a flexible work schedule is because of the demands of raising children. Working parents will always be divided in terms of time devoted to work and to their children. Flexible work schedules can allow for greater time with family to emerge. Flexible work schedules can also facilitate a sense of "being there" for children. This might take the form of being able to attend parent- teacher conferences, or watching a child's dance recital, or even being able to take a child to the doctor when it is needed. Flexible work schedules are critical for working parents because it takes into account a vital aspect of an employee's life: Their children. One example of a flexible work scheduling option which would assist this group could be telecommuting or using information technology. For example, allowing a working parent to Skype a meeting or share a presentation via googledocs allows a scheduling opportunity to be balanced with the demands of family. Another example of flexible scheduling that would help a working parent would be alternative scheduling, or a similar type of approach where there is understanding about the realities of a working parent. These workers are vital because they can contribute, but the need to create a flexible schedule that validates their experience is critical to the establishment of their success.
1. Working parents may need a flexible work schedule because they need to look after their children. Sometimes your child may become sick or have a school event where the parent needs to be present and may not be able to come to work at their regular time. Especially if their child is young, you need to have time to look after them and care for them. A flexible work schedule would allow them to be there when their kid needs them.
As for young professionals, it may be difficult to get used to a work schedule. They may have other places they need to be: school, another job, at home taking care of someone/something, etc. Usually, young professionals don't have a lot of work experience or may just be starting off and will need a flexible schedule in order to adjust.
2. Working parents would definitely benefit from alternative scheduling and time off (with pay) if needed. This will allow them to be at home with their family whenever they have to be without having to worry about their work schedule.
Young professionals would also benefit from alternative scheduling as well as compressed workweeks. Young adults have school, work, extra-curricular activities, and social time on their plate and they may need to reschedule work hours to fit it all in. Also, knowing that they will only have a four day week may help them get through their job and relieve some stress.
