The Ravishing of Lol Stein was written in 1964 by French author Marguerite Duras. It is a study of contemporary life, although it details events that happened "ten years ago" in the life of the main character, as well as what happens when she returns to her home town. There is no specified year in the story, but it was reviewed at the time as a study of contemporary issues experienced by women in the Western world, focusing as it does on emotional numbness and concern with what might have been, as the protagonist reflects upon her feelings of emptiness. The novel is set in the mid-to-late twentieth century and resonated with reviewers at the time in its portrayal of a world that was both familiar to them and surreal in its own way.
