Does anybody know the principles of Carl Rogers on diversity and anti-oppressive ways of working within the counselling field?
Carl Rogers was born in 1902, and he died in 1987. Rogers was considered to be a central figure in the “humanistic orientation.” His theory of therapy was a person-centered procedure which emphasized "self-actualization." He believed that there was an internal, biological drive to create, expand and improve our abilities and talents to the highest of our potential. Rogers also taught and believed that an individual's central motivation is to learn and to grow. His principles were guided by Genuineness, Acceptance, and Understanding.
Rogers believed that if he were genuine in his relationships with his clients, this would in turn create a better atmosphere for their work together. To be genuine the therapist must not only be in touch with his client but he must be in touch with his or her own feelings.
Not only must the therapist be “real” with the client, but they must be accepting. He believed the therapist must not be judgmental and should demonstrate respect and warmth so the client will be more accepting of himself or herself.
Finally, he must demonstrate a desire for understanding and empathize with the feelings of the client.
