It would be very helpful to get an answer before late Sunday
There are several possible threads through the text that could allow the story to be developed, or used to give an alternate ending. You would need to decide what the purpose would be in your writing. Do you want Walter to escape from his dream, or the harshness of his wife, or do you think she should suffer for her cruel treatment of him? The idea below suggests that he may escape, or at least have some peace for a short while..
The original story ends with Mitty ‘facing the firing squad’ as he waits for his wife. It is possible that he could snap out of this fantasy as she reappears, and they could return home from their errand.
Mitty could choose to drive slowly as his wife prefers, then allow his imagination to take him to the controls of an armored vehicle entering enemy territory. He could be brought back to reality by his wife declaring that they have reached their house, which could manifest from the haze of the desert sand to the neat suburb of reality.
The puppy biscuit could have been bought for a vicious but cherished lap dog, and the dreaming Walter may outwit the escaped beast, attaching the lead for its walk.
Whilst walking the dog, Walter could seek another adventure, and perhaps keep walking into the sunset.
