In an interview on June 28, 1996, Amy Tan mentioned loving fairy tales, particularly Grimm fairy tales. She also mentioned liking Bible stories, and Gothic works in general. Tan makes reference to "magical realism," as a genre she likes, a genre that includes realistic and magical elements. Other books she mentions are The Little House on the Prairie series, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Catcher in the Rye, making the point that because she was forbidden to read Catcher in the Rye, she made sure she read it! Tan says that she read a book every day when she was a child, so I would imagine it would be impossible for her to recall all of them. This interview provides great insight into Tan's life and writing career, and makes great reading. I have provided the link in case you would like to know more about this wonderful writer.
