Yes, I think he was right to bring the fawn home. It wouldn't have had a chance at survival if left to fend for itself. While it's true that you shouldn't remove an animal from the wild, in this case it seems that there was no other good option.

I disagree with the previous post. Jody saved the fawn, since it would have been killed by wild animals had he not saved it when he did. He gave it a loving year of life and enjoyed the company of the pet he never had. I had several pets as a youngster that would be considered "wild animals." However, just like Jody, I had a reason for doing so. A baby squirrel fell out of a tree during the early winds preceding a hurricane. I found it in the yard before my cat did and raised it, keeping it for several years. He was a loving animal who grew up with people just as a domesticated pet would. I also raised several quail, hatching them from eggs. They were also wonderful, loving creatures who would sit on your shoulder and coo. It's not always bad to raise a supposedly "wild" animal, especially under circumstances where the animal would be killed if left in the wild--like Flag would have been.

Whether it was "right" or not is definitely subject to opinion.  Independently from the story, I would never take a wild animal out of the wild and into my home for exactly that reason, it is a wild animal.  Nature's processes of natural selection may appear cruel to us, but they serve a purpose, and humans interfering with them hasn't generally led to good results.

That being said, there wouldn't be much of a story if Jody just waved to the yearling and went home.  Emotionally I might want to try and rescue a helpless and cute animal like that, but I don't think it would be right, no.

What do you think Jody felt when Penny said they had to shoot the fawn?
