This depends on what you mean by the "wave of the future." Will it surpass regular commerce any time soon? I highly doubt it, given that online sales only make up 8% of retail sales right now.
However, if we are speaking in more modest terms, ecommerce is certainly the wave of the future. Just one reason for this is the boom in smartphones and in tablet computers. This will make it much easier for consumers to make purchases from any place and at any time. As this happens, more and more purchases will be made online.
Online shopping is simply more convenient in many instances. It allows shoppers to shop from their homes and to compare prices and do research as they do so. There is no reason to believe that ecommerce will decline. Overall, I would say that it is the "wave of the future" so long as we do not expect it to completely surpass traditional commerce soon.
