Do you thing humankind are able to annihilate themselves? With the atomic bomb and other technology we have the instrument to do it

The total stockpile of nuclear weapons available in world today is enough to destroy the world and annihilate the total world population many times over.
I think only thing that is saving us from use of these tools of mass destruction is obviousness of their destructive ability that is not only massive but is also instantaneous. Nuclear weapons have the greatest capacity to kill, but after drippings of atom bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki about 64 years back, no other such incident has taken place. The potential has remained potential and not become reality. Unfortunately there are many other inventions of human being which is killing us slowly but surely.
There are many such things, but let us just consider environmental pollution. Thousands of people die premature death every year because of this. In Bhopal Gas Tragedy, an industrial accident, caused thousands of death in a single day, raised a lot of hue and cry, but no effective measures have been taken to eliminate the causes that cause such tragedy.
The global warming is slowly taking us taking us to the time (around 2050) when large areas of coastal regions all around the world will be submerged under water, we still continue to release more and more of green house gases in the that can lead to death of millions of people.
Thus not only humankind have the capacity to annihilate themselves, they are already moving in this direction. I do hope we learn our lesson in time and improve our ways before it is too late.
Absolutely. Far too many nations have the capacity destroying each other through atomic means. I live in Korea now, and I live everyday with threats from the North about attacking the South. I can understand how oppressive regimes get that way, and I can see how the world can be powerless to stop them, other than send them a strongly worded letter from the UN, or possibly sanctions. How long have sanctions been oppose don countries with no tangible results? 40-50 years for several countries I believe is far too long.
