Forged By Fire is a book by Sharon Draper. It is a continuation of the book Tears of a Tiger. If you have read Tears of a Tiger, you will remember a character named Gerald. Gerald could not go with the boys on their fateful trip because he had to get home due to his abusive stepfather. Gerald lives in an abusive home and regularly comes to school with bruises and cuts. Tyrone even tells that fact to the police when he is interviewed about the accident. No one seems to do anything about it.
In Forged by Fire ,the reader gets a closer view into Gerald's life situation. Gerald's stepfather, Jordan, is a drunk and approaches Gerald's little sister, Angel, sexually. His mother is substance-addicted and in denial about Jordan. She wants a man in her life and thinks Jordan can do no wrong. When the children try to tell her of Jordan's advances, she denys that he is dangerous and has approached Angel sexually. When she is hit by a car and placed in the hospital, Gerald and Angel have to fend for themselves against their abusive stepfather. Gerald and Angel are close and Gerald tries desperately to protect Angel from their stepfather's attentions. He finally realizes that he has to face Jordan on a physical level. Fire becomes an important element in the story, especially at the end.
This book won the Coretta Scott King award for the best book for young adults. It deals with a teenager's struggle with adult issues. It is an easy read in that most chapters are only four pages long.
