Forged By Fire is a book by Sharon Draper. It is a continuation of the book Tears of a Tiger. If you have read Tears of a Tiger, you will remember a character named Gerald. Gerald could not go with the boys on their fateful trip because he had to get home due to his abusive stepfather. Gerald lives in an abusive home and regularly comes to school with bruises and cuts. His mother is substance-addicted and in denial about Jordan. She wants a man in her life and thinks Jordan can do no wrong. When the children try to tell her of Jordan's advances, she denys that he is dangerous and has approached Angel sexually. When she is hit by a car and placed in the hospital, Gerald and Angel have to fend for themselves against their abusive stepfather. Gerald and Angel are close and Gerald tries desperately to protect Angel from their stepfather's attentions. He finally realizes that he has to face Jordan on a physical level.
