This book is one of the installments of the Rot and Ruin horror series. The zombie apocalypse is in the past, and now the characters have to battle for a new future. It has been fourteen years since First Night, and six million people have been turned into zombies since then!

The main character, Benny, has some sad and horrible first memories. His very first memory is of his father, who has already turned into a zombie, carrying away his mother. Benny's mother hands Benny to his older brother in order to keep him safe. What a first memory to have! As a result of this memory, Benny thinks that his brother, Tom, is an absolute coward for leaving his mother.

The rest of the people in the fenced in village have a very different opinion of Benny's brother, Tom. Their opinion of Tom is that he is an amazing zombie killer, and someone who keeps them all safe.  As Benny is about to turn fifteen, he learns that he is going to lose all his rations of food unless he gets a job. Much to his chagrin, he has to take a job as an apprentice to his brother in order to join the family in killing zombies. As they go out of their fenced in compound, and into the zombie area called Rot and Ruin, Benny learns that his brother is someone to be admired for his skills in zombie killing.

In conclusion,  Benny learns all of the tricks to zombie killing from his brother, Tom. In the midst of learning that zombies are not fast and not hard to kill, then he also begins a youthful romance with a girl named Nix. In the midst of all the blood and gore, there is an evil rival who is trying to sabotage their every move.
