This statement is too broad for me to agree with. Ending all “welfare” programs would surely be a bad idea.
On the one hand, there is something to this statement. Giving money to poor people without requiring them to work or gain skills can certainly erode their desire to work. This would be harmful to them.
On the other hand, there are a number of things we must think of. First, there are many children who benefit from welfare programs. Their plight is surely not their fault. Second, there are many poor people who are poor in part because of changes in our economy which make it hard for them to get jobs that pay well. Finally, even if the poor are at fault for their predicament, it is surely inhumane to simply tell them to “sink or swim.”
So, while it would probably be a good idea to change welfare to some degree, it is surely not a good thing to eliminate it completely.
