This is an interesting and practical question. Let me give you a few perspectives that might help you answer this question.

First, education is a good thing for all people. The more education a person has, the more that person will be able to live up to his or her potential. Also education has a way to opening up a person's mind to explore the richness of the world. Hence, whether a person is a teacher, mechanic, or something else, education is always a positive benefit.

Second, college may not be the best path for all to gain education. There are different avenues to become educated. Self-study can be one of the ways. I know some very intelligent people who are completely self-taught.

Finally, if you want to get into more complicated and competitive areas of the automotive industry, having more education can help you later on in life. In general, if education is available for you, it is not a bad course of action.

Well you need some type of education to become a mechanic. But I think that no matter what type of occupation you choose, you should definetly get some type of a college degree because you never know how bad the economy could become and it having that degree could potentially be a cushion for you to fall on if you would happen to lose your job.
