Do the ideas of the Concord Coalition make sense for the United States?
First, we have to realize that there is no such thing as a plan for reducing the deficit that is simple, easy, and effective. All plans have some problems with them. However, the Concord Coalition’s general ideas do make a great deal of sense for the US.
One of the major problems faced by the US is the lack of cooperation between the parties. The two parties tend to seem more interested in making one another look bad than in doing anything that will actually help the United States get back on a more solid financial footing. The Concord Coalition promotes deficit reduction through both changes to the tax code and reductions in spending. Too often, it appears that the Democrats want only to increase taxes and the Republicans want only to decrease spending. Neither of these options would be good for the country. Therefore, it makes sense to try to do as the Concord Coalition suggests. We need to have shared sacrifices where both sides give up some of what they would ideally like to have.
Because the Concord Coalition proposes a centrist, balanced set of solutions, its ideas are good for the country.
