The most honest thing to say about The Lovely Bones' treatment of sexuality is that it varies. By that I mean, it is treated as something powerfully good and important when it creates bonds between people, as with the connection between Ray and Susie, one that spans even the bridge between life and death. Susie longs for sex, as part of life. But sex at its darkest (fused with sadism) ended her life, and somewhere in between, her mother's affair helps rip her family further apart. Sex changes things, and forever, whether it is a longed for kiss or a deadly rape.
