There are typically said to be five philosophies of marketing.  They are:

  • Production concept
  • Product concept
  • Selling concept
  • Marketing concept
  • Societal marketing concept

Looking at the marketing concept, the main strength of this concept is that it gives consumers what they want.  This concept emphasizes finding out what customers want and giving it to them as much as possible.

The major criticism of this is that it is short-sighted.  An example of this would be the IBM executive who said in the 1970s that consumers had no desire for personal computers.
