Learning objectives and outcomes assessment are increasingly being mandated at state, provincial, or federal levels. Much of how one states learning objectives is based on the regulatory environment in which you are operating. At my university, professors must use fixed categories of learning objectives formulated in quite specific ways to satisfy government mandated programme review criteria. Normally learning objectives are formulated as a list; e.g.,

- Master 500 new vocabulary words.

- Be able to produce and comprehend subordinate clauses

Increasingly, though, learning objectives are being included in tables in which objectives are mapped out against general categories such as skill objectives, knowledge objectives, etc.
