One significant technological change is from the advent of networks and communication technology. The result has been that employees may be located anywhere in the world and can work in multiple time zones simultaneously. Technology has reduced employment in favor of contracted labor or as it is more commonly referred to as the gig economy. The day of employees remaining loyal to one employer is over. Corporations operate in the world economy. To remain competitive and to remain nimble in shifting economic climates, communication technology has allowed them to contract for employees on an as-needed basis. Contracted labor is fraught with difficulty, as human resource managers cope with the task of credentialing employees, maintaining records, and operating in multiple legal environments. The benefit to employers is they are able to reduce operating costs significantly. The benefit to the contractor is they are able to maintain independence, autonomy, and create the quality of life they desire.

The shift to contract labor is only possible by improved communication and technology. The next shift will be how the government responds to replacing employees with contracted labor. Human resource managers will need to be prepared for impending legislative action regarding benefits (health, pension), ethical concerns (liability issues such as sexual harassment), and finding ways to retain the best contractors for their companies.

One technological breakthrough, the use of online social networking as part of an employee profile and review process of a potential applicant for a position, has transformed how employer perception has evolved.  Since items that are posted on the web are issues of what amounts to be public record, it is something that has altered how potential applicants for positions are viewed.  For example, provocative pictures, images of questionable judgment, as well as the images that individuals choose to project are ones that can alter how prospective employees are seen.  I think that this has transformed both the applicant process and how individuals are seen.  This is an element of technology that has fostered both more vigilance in individual behavior as well as their perception on the part of employers.  In this forum, technology has greatly changed individual perception and the reality that accompanies it.
