In the highly-structured, completely manufactured World State, science is viewed and treated like a religion, where Henry Ford is comparable to Christ. In this godless modern society, religion is replaced by the "feelies" and is completely eradicated by the World Controllers in order to ensure stability. Mustapha Mond elaborates on the reason religion cannot coexist in the World State by telling John the Savage,

God isn’t compatible with machinery and scientific medicine and universal happiness. You must make your choice. Our civilization has chosen machinery and medicine and happiness. (Huxley, 159)

The World Controllers mock religion and view the main function of religion as a way to pacify the masses. In the novel, modern society is built for comfort, which makes God and religion useless to the completely content, manufactured citizens.
