This is a question that has been widely discussed in Christian literature from its earliest periods. It was actually inherited from Jewish theology. The Hellenistic Jewish writer Philo of Alexandria cited two important passages in the Old Testament that continued to influence Christian thought on the topic. The first was the description of the Jews bringing the gold from Egypt in Exodus. Philo drew a parallel between the Egyptian gold taken by the Jews, and Jews appropriating pagan learning. The second metaphor for pagan learning being appropriated by Jews in Philo was that of Hagar, the Egyptian slave who bore Ishmael.
