In We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo, we see global influences on local communities on both ends of Darling's journey. Let's look at this in more detail.

Darling lives the first ten years of her life in an extremely poor shantytown in Zimbabwe ironically named Paradise. Darling and her friends spend their days stealing food and dreaming. The people of Paradise are oppressed by the federal government, and Darling's parents have even lost their home, which was bulldozed along with the rest of Darling's old neighborhood. To these young people, the West, especially America, seems like a true paradise.

Darling looks at the world through the eyes of a child, but she sees quite clearly. She understands, for instance, that colonization is pretty much the same as stealing a country. She knows that colonization has contributed to the regime her people are struggling under as well.

Yet when Darling arrives in the US to live with her aunt in Detroit, she realizes that the old saying about the grass being greener on the other side is not true. Darling now represents a global influence in her new community, and she struggles with that. Her grasp of English is not great, and she has trouble communicating. She works hard to help her aunt, but money is always tight. She would like to go home to visit, but she understands that she does not have the necessary paperwork to come back to the US if she does. Life is far from perfect no matter where in the world Darling lives.
