Act 1 scene v is based upon the struggle between love and hate.  The beginning of the scene takes place in the Capulet home where Lord Capulet is throwing a party to celebrate the love he has for those who favor him.  Another reason for the party is to hopefully kindle a love between Juliet and her suitor, Paris.  Romeo enters the room and he finds the love of his life, Juliet.  Even though he is wearing a costume, Tybalt, Lady Capulet’s nephew, recognizes Romeo’s voice and vows to avenge the insult to his uncle by killing Romeo.  Capulet stops his nephew and tells him that on this night he must love his enemy.  Tybalt is not appeased by this wisdom from his uncle and hate for Romeo festers inside.  When Romeo and Juliet finally meet they spend a considerable amount of time flirting until it is time for Juliet to retire for the night.  Juliet asks her trusted nurse to find out the young man’s name.  It is at this time that Juliet says she would “die if he be but married.”  The irony to this is that if Romeo was married Juliet would not die at the end of the play.
