I like the quote a lot. There was, in fact, a very deep desire on the part of a great many colonists to remain a part of the British Empire. They felt a deep allegiance to the country from which many of their ancestors had come, to which many of their children had been sent for advanced schooling, with which they conducted much of their trade and from whom they had inherited many of their ways of governing themselves. Many colonists resented the condescending way in which Parliament treated the colonies, but they wanted a change in Parliament's attitude, not a revolution.
