Lear is a king with a king's mentality. I agree with mshurn in that his most prominent trait as the play opens is his great pride. Lear has internalized the potency and the privilege of his position as king to such an extent that he feels he can take off the crown, so to speak, yet retain the qualities and the exceptional treatment of a king.
