The relationship between Hassan and Amir changed after the rape in the alley. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that his uneasy feelings towards Hassan were amplified. Let me name a few of them.

First, Amir's guilt never left him. He knew that Hassan was a loyal and great friend. However, Amir could not reciprocate. He saw what Assef did to Hassan in the alley, but Amir did not help Hassan at all. He was too afraid. Amir could not live with this guilt and every time he saw Hassan, it reminded him of his weakness and guilt.

Second, Amir also felt great shame. We need to realize that the Middle East is a shame culture. He could not bear the shame of Hassan being so good to him. Hassan's goodness made Amir mad literally.

Third, Amir also felt greater insecurity in his relationship with Baba. He knew in his heart that Baba had a special place in his heart for Hassan.

In light of all this, Amir framed Hassan and so Hassan left.
