The anabolic effects of the male sex hormone testosterone include such things as bone maturation, growth of muscle mass, growth in height as well as increased strength. Males produce this hormone in their testes and females produce small amounts in the ovaries. It is a steroid hormone. When testosterone acts as an androgen, it causes the early development of the sex organs--including the penis and scrotum. Later on in the development of males it affects the secondary sex characteristics seen at puberty--deep voice, body hair, further growth of sex organs.
