Did Jonas really heard music behind him at the end of The Giver or was it only an echo?Did Jonas really heard music behind him at the end of The Giver or was it only an echo?
This should be moved to The Giver Discussion Forum so you can get interpretations from more viewpoints.
I think Jonas was hearing music from the village in front of them as he and Gabe come down the hill on their sled. Jonas had never been given the memory of music by the Giver, but the ability to recognize what the sounds were and their significance as a source of support, welcome, and love for the two hungry, cold, lonely boys was evident to Jonas.
Jonas imagined also hearing music behind him - the community using this joyous memory to help it deal with memories that were not so pleasant but that were also coming into their awareness as a result of Jonas's departure.
Every year I have my class debate this issue (more specifically, the issue of whether or not they die). I have heard some really persuasive arguments both ways. I think to a certain extent there is evidence enough in the text to back either perspective. It just depends on which you find more persuasive, which might relate to what kind of person you are. Are you optimistic or not?
I don't think that there could be music behind them. Even if Jonas's escape changed his society so quickly, we have to remember that his community was far, far away. He and Gabe ran for so long that they left the community much too far behind to be hearing music from there. So I think it's an echo or maybe just something in their own minds.
"But perhaps it was only an echo." This "echo" may be the memory of music trying to touch him as Jonas is the keeper now of other memories. This memory of music may have been embedded in other memories. Hence, it is an "echo."
i just thought about it and
I think that at the end of the book Gabe and Jonas die. I think this because maybe when they made it to the top Jonas fainted. Then Since Jonas fainted Gabe died too because he was being held by Jonas and was very weak. I think this because first of all why would there be a sled at the top? Just MAGICALLY a sled is there? I think that when he reached the top he fainted and then all of his memories flashed before his eyes. This is believable because one of Jonas' most memorable memories was sledding down a hill. Then he was just lying there while music played in a far off distance. My second theory that happened was that they really did find a sled at the end and slid down a hill. But since they were going to fast they didn't realize they hit a bump and fell in to the snow. Then he started to lose consciousness. But people who were caroling managed to pass by and save them. Then Gabe and Jonas wake up consciousness in a new book and they live in a new community that is like the real world. Where they have to adapt to making changes in their life. These are 2 theories that i have. the end one kinda links in with my first comment
thx guys literly just finished reading minutes ago and was really pissed off about that. my opinion was that there was music behind him and he was saved but idk actually.
This is an open ended story, it really depends on your opinion.
Logically it is probably an "echo" inb Jonas's mind, but the abilities of Recievers in this story is obviously superficial if not for genetic technology. What I mean is, based on the information in the story, it is possible that it really was music.
In conclusion, it depends on your opinion, and if you are more logistic or imaginitive.
