In the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, a family film I highly recommend, Akeelah is fascinated with words. Her inner determination to know and then to win lead her to enter spelling contests and be the winner. Her persistence with word contests leads the neighborhood to unite to help her succeed as they recognize someone who is truly a positive force in the neighborhood. The professor who helps her also helps himself by being willing to leave the safe world he has created and extend himself for Akeelah. So his reluctance and mistrust at first become a driving force for Akeelah and for himself. She works harder than ever to prove herself to him. The young boy at the Scripps National Spelling Bee helps Akeelah because of his own inner desire to keep the contest from becoming all-consuming. He finds it fun to help Akeelah as well as compete in a positive way instead of the cut throat way others use as a means to win. His gentle contributions and positive competition with Akeelah give her someone to be a kid with and yet compete. Many people in the film find the good character traits within themselves as they help a young girl succeed in her desire to win.
