Provide evidence that shows the determination and courage of Santiago.
Throughout the novel, Santiago shows his determination and courage. First, he follows his own path, defying his father's wishes. He does this even though his own way is riskier and more uncertain.
Second, even after he is cheated out of his money in Tangier, Santiago, though distressed, refuses to be defeated and go home. Instead, he fights against the setback by getting a job working for a crystal merchant.
Third, when the crystal merchant wants to keep him working in his shop, Santiago resists his disparaging words:
“I don’t know anyone around here who would want to cross the desert just to see the Pyramids. They’re just a pile of stone. You could build one in your backyard.”
Santiago is willing to risk dangerous journeys, beatings, and uncertainty to be true to his own Personal Legend and gain his treasure. He even returns home again when he discovers the treasure has been there all along. He thus demonstrates that we are in control of our own destinies. He does not let scoffers or negative people deter him, nor does he let fear of hardship stop his quest.
I think one good example that shows courage and determination in Santiago occurs when he decides to tell his father that he wants to travel the world instead of staying home with the family. It shows courage and determination, because Santiago knows that his father won't like the decision. Regardless Santiago faces his father and has the conversation instead of just running away like a coward or not having the conversation at all.
The rest of the story shows Santiago's courage frequently. His journey toward obtaining his personal legend is not an easy one. He is frequently swindled or attacked, and he is always wrestling with the idea of just turning around and going back home. He knows that it is safe at home, but he determines to continue despite the hardship. That's both determination and bravery.
